1 ESF workshop in Perugia “Toward a 3rd generation European Gravitational Wave Observatory”
Perugia September 2005

2 What ESF is European Science Foundation
Non-governmental organization, composed by 76/78 European public research institutions of 30 different countries 30 year old PESC (Physical and Engineering Sciences) Institutions: France: CNRS, CEA Germany DFG, MPG, HGF, Union der Deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften Italy CNR, INFN, INFM Netherlands NOW, KNAW UK EPSRC, PPARC, The Royal Society

3 ESF mission The mission is
“The ESF promotes the development of European science at the forefront of knowledge by bringing together leading scientists and scholars and research and founding agencies to debate, plan and implement European research” ESF is collaborating with the Commission to the realization of ERA (European Research Area) “ESF is at present involved in providing advice to the Commission on the various new instruments for FP7” ESF principal networking instruments: ESF Exploratory workshops enable scientists to come together and to examine novel topical scientific issues ESF Scientific Programmes are longer-term networking activities focused on specific themes ESF Scientific Networks …. No new networks are currently planned

4 2005 ESF Exploratory Workshops
2004 Call for proposal: 308 eligible proposals in all domains 60 workshops will be organized 15 workshops in the PESC activities Links:

5 Workshop in Perugia ESF exploratory workshop in Perugia:
Hotel Giò, September 2005 Toward a 3rd generation European Gravitational Wave Observatory Idea born after the proposal we made in the FP6-Design study Original proposal strongly concentrated on the 3rd generation detectors Applicants: M.Punturo, F.Vetrano, F.Marchesoni Short time dedicated to 2nd generation detectors Preliminary agenda communicated to ESF in the proposal Taking in account the failure of the EGO-DS proposal and the success of the ILIAS proposal we need to reverse the situation, giving more room to the 2nd generation detectors

6 Scientific Committee A Scientific Committee is forming now
Real work is expected Talks must be stimulated and selected Round table must be organized The aim is to reach some agreement for the development of GW in Europe (remember the role of ESF in FP7) ESF rules and constrains The workshop is a “closed” meeting More that 2 months before the list of invited persons must be sent to ESF: the invitations are sent by ESF ESF refunds the expenses of the participants (many rules!) ESF will send a supervisor to attend to the meeting A calendar of meetings of the Scientific committee must be defined soon Is my intention to ask for the external support of ILIAS and EGO to this activity

7 Aim of the workshop The workshop has a double aim:
Scientific aim: to make the snapshot of the status of the art of the R&D activities in Europe for the development of 2nd and 3rd generation GW detectors Many presentations on this sense Proceedings will be published by Journal pf Physics We must be careful with the proximity of the Amaldi conference Organization aim: to bring around a rounded (or squared) table the main actors in Europe on GW research to start (or continue) the definition of a common European project on 2nd and/or 3rd generation detectors round table ESF representative FP7 scenario
