Networking Prepared by: Salem State University Career Services Welcome to Salem State University Career Service’s Networking Workshop. Introduce yourself and goals for the workshop: Goals Give students an opportunity to learn what networking is and how to begin the process. Give students the opportunity to practice effective networking techniques. Give students information about resources to assist them in networking.

Name Major Year Career Objectives Interests Let’s begin by having each person in the room introduce themselves, name, major, year, career objectives, interests. Presenter then polls the audience to see if any student knows anyone who is involved in this career or shares this interest. This is an example of networking.

The development of relationships with industry professionals who can offer advice, guidance, information, job leads, resources and additional contacts Networking is the development of relationships with industry professionals who can offer advice, guidance, information, job leads, resources and additional contacts. Anyone can network. All it takes is a little of your time and enthusiasm.

Decide on your networking purpose Research yourself – Self assessment Create self introductions – your soundbite, your commercial

Classmates Alumni Parents & family Neighbors Classmates’ parents & family Professors & advisors Former employers Professional associations Speakers & career fair representatives Student clubs & activities Other people you know Before we continue I’d like everyone to write down a list of contacts of everyone whom you think you could network with who could provide information on your career interests. Hand Out YOUR CURRENT NETWORK- Have students spend several minutes starting the list Have students review list. Point out that networking is not difficult but capitalizes on your already existing networks.

Sound bite: Hi, my name is Jimmy Salem. I’m a theatre major at Salem State University and I’m interested in learning more about the theatre management field. Commercial Commercial: “I became interested in acting during high school when I performed in a number of productions. Then, this past summer I interned at a community theatre near my home. It was during this time that I came to realize that I wanted to make theatre my career. I am interning with the Blue Man Group this semester and am enjoying learning more about arts management. While I love performing I am finding that I have a strong attention to detail and really find arts management interesting and challenging.” Have students write sound bite and commercial
