St Luke’s Church of England School Newsletter 08 July 2016
Message from Mrs Tyler Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend the end of year concert yesterday. I am sure you enjoyed ‘celebrating’ with the children as much as we did – the children certainly seemed to have a great time and, as ever, ‘did us proud’ with their singing, dancing and poetry. It is such a delight to see them performing time after time with such enthusiasm and confidence – our thanks to Mrs Cawthorne who has inspired this love of music at St Luke’s. Our Summer Fair last Saturday raised £1,420 towards the cost of some staging, which will enhance your viewing next year I am sure! Thank you very much to everyone who supported the Fair - whether you helped on a stall, set up, cleared up or came along to have fun and spend some money – your support was very much appreciated. Of course, these events are not just about raising money – many parents and visitors commented on the wonderful family atmosphere. Next week is our Olympic Week and Mrs Shulemaja has organised a variety of fun activities to get the children in the Olympic spirit. We will open with an Olympic Assembly and a mini Opening Ceremony – during which the Olympic torch will be passed around the ‘daily mile’. This will finish in the garden area, where the children will parade in their continents before ‘becoming’ the Olympic rings – we hope we will have photographic evidence of this! You are welcome to join us on Tuesday at 2pm for our SLS Sports Afternoon, which this year will take place beside the tennis courts at Golders Hill Park (the entrance is on West Heath Road). I do hope as many of you as possible will be able to attend the short 5 years Celebration Service this Sunday 10th July at 11am, where we will celebrate with the people of St Luke’s, who were responsible for setting up our school five years ago. All the children will be taking part in the service and sitting together. We would like them to wear school uniform and arrive at the church at 10.50am please. Thank you. What? When? Wearing? He has really loved learning all about numbers with the children and would like to share his ‘Number Book’ with them. Thank you to all the parents for taking part! KS1 Class Golden Book Eado for helping others during our school trip. Mae for teaching others the school dance. Maths Monkey… is still at Maths School. News from Reception It’s been another busy week in Reception! Firstly, I need to say a huge well done to all the children, I hope you’ll agree that they all spoke, sang and danced so brilliantly – I am so proud of them all! Back in the classroom the children have continued to make the most of the outside area, exploring the water play with enthusiasm! They play so well as a class that they often make up elaborate games and challenges – this week’s game is: how many foam bricks can you jump over and does this change when you start from a higher point e.g a chair? It is lovely to observe them problem solving and having fun at the same time! We have also continued to learn about pirates and the children have been asking me lots of questions about pirates with wooden legs, and people with ‘robot’ legs (prosthetics). So, on Thursday the children received a video message from Josh (Miss Milne’s friend) who told them all about his ‘little leg’ and the prosthetic legs that he uses. They were very interested to learn all about how ‘robot’ legs work and loved watching a video of him rock climbing. We will use this video as a starting point to learn about the Olympics and Paralympics next week! I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday for the SLS Celebration service. News from KS1 The children felt very proud of their performance of Thursday. They loved showing everyone the dances they had learned, their class rap and singing to you. We have also been busy practising more songs for our service on Sunday. On Thursday afternoon the children visited Mount Anvil for an afternoon of activities. They learned about the history of Kidderpore Hall and the owner, John Teil, who was a leather merchant and made leather mice. They met Ivor the Builder who taught them about staying safe near a building site. In class we have also been busy learning about seaside holidays from the past. We have been comparing holidays from 100 years ago, 50 years ago and now. The children have been fascinated by the black and white photographs and what people wore on the beach. News from KS2 This week in KS2 we have had a Science and Humanities focus. We have been learning about animals and their place in the food chain and have considered changes to the environment and the effect fire and flood have on the landscape and communities. Inspired by the Euros and the SLS football kits, the children have been designing their own football kits. As you might imagine, we have also been practising for the Concert – I hope you will agree it was worth all the children’s hard work! We send our best wishes to Mr Stephenson who was admitted to hospital on Tuesday with a bad foot infection– he is on the road to recovery and we hope we will see him later next week.
