1
Inequalities Solving inequalities are like solving equations. The one difference is a greater than or less than sign instead of an equal sign.
2
Inequalities Understanding the words and meanings.
Is less than or fewer than < Is greater than or more than exceeds > Is less than or equal to, is no more than, is at most < Is greater than or equal to, is no less than, is at least >
3
Examples: 2 + x < 13 -2 -2 x < 11
x < 11 This means the value of x is 11 or any number less than 11. x + 3 > 10 x > 7 This means the value of x is greater than 7.
4
- 6 > n – 5 - 1 > n - 8 > y + 3 - 11 > y x – 3 < 8 x < 11 y – 8 < 5 y < 13
5
y – 3 > 2 y > 5 When graphing an inequality, the open circle means it is NOT equal to 5 but is any number greater than 5. y – 6 < 4 y < 10 When graphing an inequality, the closed circle means it is equal to 10 and any number less than 10.
6
Ticket Out the Door Equations: x + 4 = 12 y – 4 = -15 t – 8 = 22
Inequalities: x + 8 > 3 y – 9 > 4 r – 7 < 12 p + 6 < -5
