Throughout WWII, Canadian troops played an important role in victory for the Allies Some battles, like during WWI, marked Canada's participation: The Battle of Dieppe in 1942 The landing in Normandy on D-Day

The Battle of Dieppe: In August 1942, the Allies were about to enter the port of Dieppe in France to test the German forces Attempt to regain occupied France

Prepared for 3 years, 5000 Canadians participate The Canadian attack at Dieppe was planned as a surprise attack, but Canadian troops were taken by the Germans stationed on clifftop

The objective of the attack was to open a second front against the Germans Opening a Western front, there would be less pressure on the Soviets who fought against the Germans on the eastern side

The result of the attack was disastrous In just a few hours of battle, of the 5,000 Canadians: 1000 deaths 500 injured 1250 captured 2250 escaped (survivors)

Difficult Landing for Canadians because of the waves and coral Despite a loss of 1000 soldiers, Canadians have the biggest breakthrough in Juno 7500 Americans die in Omaha Despite some difficulties, the invasion is considered a success: Day 1: 150,000 soldiers, 6,000 vehicles 1 month later: one million soldiers, 200,000 vehicles

France is completely discharged a few months later The next canadian mission is to liberate the Netherlands in spring 1945 (Tulip Festival) Germany has to fight on three fronts: To the west against the Allies in France Southern Italy against the Allies To the east in the USSR and Poland against the Soviets
