5. 2.5 – Jamestown: The First English Colony
Summary:
After several attempts, the English established their first permanent colony at Jamestown in Virginia.

8. 2.5 Jamestown Starves & Survives
Summary:
After Smith returned to England, and the Indians refused to trade with colonists, Jamestown began to starve. The decline of the colony led to increased tensions with the natives and the kidnapping and imprisonment of Pocahontas. In the spring of 1610 a new shipment of supplies, colonists and soldiers revitalized the colony.

9. 2.6 – New Netherland: The short-lived Dutch
Summary:
Hoping to find the NW Passage, the Dutch set sail. In 1609, the Dutch landed in present day New York. In 1621 merchants officially started the colony along the Hudson river. Fur trading made this colony profitable and their relationships with the Iroquois tribe set the stage for a rivalry with the French and Huron Tribe. Eventually, the English pushed the Dutch off the land and New Netherland becomes New York.

Dutch West India Company: Proprietary company who officially founded the colony.
