Human Resource Development
Goal: Attract and retain women and minorities in computational science. Focus: Place emphasis on MSMI and women. Institutions build on past successes. Justification: Our Rice Successes. The Loss of the Precious Few. The Modified Peter Principle. Motivational and Support Activity: We will aggressively participate in two meetings devoted to increasing diversity in computer and computational science -- Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing (even years) Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing (odd years) Panels Tutorials Papers (VGrADS Research) The travel for student participants and attendees to these conferences will be supported with VGrADS dollars.

Work Through Existing Programs
Supporting Pre-College CS VGrADS will provide content and support to existing pre-college programs – such as the Rice NSF-funded Computer Science Computing and Mentoring Partnership (CS-CAMP), June 2004 and 2005. Make presentations and provide curriculum at CS-CAMP sessions (Tapia and Cooper) Participate in planning and development of future CS-CAMP sessions, in preparation for scaling the program. Disseminate materials nationally, through NSF supported workshops, including the National Computational Science Institute’s (NCSI) summer workshops, and the SC’xy Conferences.

Work Through Existing Programs
Supporting AGEP and REU’s Supplements We will expand Rice University’s existing program – Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. VGrADS will support two AGEP students. VGrADS will apply for two REU supplements. It’s important that these students work directly with scientists who are doing active research in VGrADS at the various VGrADS institutions.

Education/Training Graduate Undergraduate
Course development incorporating Grid material Student exchanges among research groups Undergraduate Bring Grid computing into the classroom through new courses General education courses in technology – such as Kennedy’s Information Technology Architectures Present tutorials and demonstrations of VGrADS technology at the annual SC’xy Conference.

EOTC Management The VGrADS Education Outreach and Training Committee (EOTC), chaired by Richard Tapia, will review and plan VGrADS EOT programs, including efforts to encourage minorities and women to pursue careers in computer science. Tapia will work out of the Center for Excellence and Equity in Education, and will be assisted by Cynthia Lanius* who will run the day-to-day VGrADS EOT operations. Planning sessions will convene via teleconferences and . The committee will coordinate EOT efforts among VGrADS sites. The EOTC will include a representative from each of the VGrADS sites.
