2. Adverbs! Describe (modify) the verb in a sentence.
The pumpkin screamed loudly.

What type of scream was it?
Loud
Loudly is the adverb because
it describes the scream.

3. Adverbs
These describing words (adverbs) can answer the following questions about the verb.
Where
Time (when?, how long?, how often?)
Manner (how?)
Accompaniment? (with whom?)

4. Adverbs Where: Time: A rat ran upstairs. Ms. Cocchi smiled yesterday.
What is the verb?
ran
Where did the rat creep?
Upstairs
What is the adverb?
Time:

Smiled

A man walked quietly past the haunted house.

Where

Adverbs are usually only ONE word, while adverbial phrases use MULTIPLE words to answer these questions.
Example: The black cat climbed into the tree.

Into the tree
Into the tree is the adverbial phrase

8. Adverbial Phrases Adverbial phrases begin with prepositions.
Prepositions are words that describe where something is.
Examples: In, under, around, over, with
