Adverbs! Describe (modify) the verb in a sentence.
The pumpkin screamed loudly. Screamed is the what? Verb What type of scream was it? Loud Loudly is the adverb because it describes the scream.

Adverbs These describing words (adverbs) can answer the following questions about the verb. Where Time (when?, how long?, how often?) Manner (how?) Accompaniment? (with whom?)

Adverbs Where: Time: A rat ran upstairs. Ms. Cocchi smiled yesterday.
What is the verb? ran Where did the rat creep? Upstairs What is the adverb? Time: Ms. Cocchi smiled yesterday. Smiled When did she smile? Yesterday

Adverbs Manner (in what way)
A man walked quietly past the haunted house. What is the verb? Walked In what way did he walk? Quietly What is the adverb? Accompaniment The kids walked together. How did they walk? Together

Adverbs Tips: Adverbs can also be used before the verb.
Many adverbs end in –ly Brightly, beautifully, quietly, sadly, happily The dog barked angrily. Adverbs can also be used before the verb. The man loudly snored. What is the adverb? What is it describing? The child happily skipped.

Adverbial Phrases Just like adverbs, adverbial phrases answer the questions of… Where Time (when?, how long?, how often?) Manner (how?) Accompaniment? (with whom?) …in a sentence. Adverbs are usually only ONE word, while adverbial phrases use MULTIPLE words to answer these questions. Example: The black cat climbed into the tree. What is the verb? climbed Where did the cat climb? Into the tree Into the tree is the adverbial phrase

Adverbial Phrases Adverbial phrases begin with prepositions.
Prepositions are words that describe where something is. Examples: In, under, around, over, with Lets watch this video to learn more! Example: The bird flew over the tree. Over is the preposition

Adverbial Phrases Find the Preposition and the Prepositional Phrase.
The woman looked under the chair. What is the verb? Looked What is the preposition? Under What did the woman look under? The chair Remember: the adverbial phrase begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun What is the prepositional phrase: Under the chair.

Adverbial phrases Adverbial phrases do not just modify verbs, but also other adverbs and adjectives. adverb: The dog slept soundly in the house. What is the verb? Slept What is the adverb? Soundly Where did the dog sleep soundly? In the house What is the prepositional phrase?

What is the adjective? Excited Where was he excited? At the party What is the adverbial phrase?

Tips: adverbial phrases can be in any part of a sentence In the attic, I found a spider. What is the adverbial phrase? In the attic Note: Usually adverbial phrases at the beginning of a sentence follow a comma. I walked happily into the backyard and found an owl staring at me.
