1 Posters Analysis

2 Skyfall This is a poster for the film ‘Skyfall’. I think this poster is really effective because of its simplicity. The black really stands out against the white and likewise with the white writing on the black suit. The fact that Daniel Craig appears as a dark image puts a lot more emotion into the image because he appears a darker character, however because of the previous James Bond films, the audience is already aware that he is the good guy. This is another reason why the poster can be so simple, because James Bond is such a well known series of films, this poster needs no more other than one simple image and the title of the film.

3 2012 Most posters for films may include the main characters but this poster has gone for a higher focus on the setting and background. The character included is probably the character who you see the least as he only makes a couple of very short appearances. The title of the film refers to a date that was in the near future (at the time) and by looking at the scenario on the poster, we can see that this film is most likely an end of the world, post apocalyptic, dystopian type film. The tag line at the top ‘We were warned’ also gives a certain impression about the film. Most stories about the end of the world tend to be made up or not believed by people so when it actually happens, lots of people would of seen it coming and a lot won’t of. I think it is quite effective how the writing has been placed. The dark rocks act as negative space for the writing to be placed on and because the rocks are quite a dark colour it means that the light writing really stands out against them. The size of the waves also have a big impression on the audience, not only are the waves taking over the world but also the poster, hence the amount of space they take up. You can also compare the size of the waves to the house that they are smashing as you really get a sense of the extreme mass of the4 water and mountains.

4 Heat This poster for heat replicates a poster that our group are thinking about making for our film. I really like the blue gradient that has been put over it as it gives off quite a cold feel to it. This poster appears to be character based because three of the main characters are featured central at the top but there is also a picture of a scenario or setting below them. The blue gradient with the black background helps to merge and blend all the images together and this is one of the reasons I think our group should do something similar to this because we could have different images of characters and a setting but we could merge them altogether using colours. The title suits the poster because the colours are even similar on the title to the poster. Also all the writing at the bottom is placed in negative black space – similar to the 2012 poster – so this seems to be a common theme across lots of film posters so this might be a good idea that our group could replicate in our poster. Since our poster is part of the British crime genre, I think our poster should be fairly character based just like the heat poster. Although I like the 2012 poster, that kind of poster suits a dystopian or post apocalyptic type film where as British crime films tend to be heavily character based so we need to show that on the poster we make.
