Giving to the Needy (6:1-4)
Sermon on the Mount Giving to the Needy (6:1-4) Old Testament law provided for the needy Jesus encouraged the care of the needy Danger: Motive and not the fact that others see & know Public performance (Synagogue & streets) Not that it is wrong there Common place for beggars (Acts 3:2; John 9:1, 8) Motive: to be seen of men – get praise & credit Private alms – but public advertisement Don’t even praise self (v. 3) Should just forget it – rather than thinking how good we are Idea is seen in Matt. 25:37-39

Giving to the Needy (6:1-4)
Sermon on the Mount Giving to the Needy (6:1-4) Old Testament law provided for the needy Jesus encouraged the care of the needy Danger: Motive and not the fact that others see & know Point: Citizens of the kingdom should be concerned with devotion to God and not merely a reputation of devotion and praise of men!
