1. The End of the Games
In the 2nd Century BC, the Romans conquered Greece and although the Games continued until AD393 (AD means after Christ’s birth), a Christian Roman Emperor called Theodosius 1 banned them and the Temple of Zeus (a magnificent building where the Greek people worshipped their gods) was eventually destroyed by the Romans.
Over the years, Olympia fell into ruin and finally, after an earthquake and flood, the site lay buried and remained hidden for over 1000 years.

2. The Modern Olympics
After being hidden for over one thousand years, an archaeologist (someone who tries to work out what life was like in the past by studying what people left behind) called Ernst Curtis uncovered the site of the ancient Olympics in This made people become interested in finding out more about the Games.
