Collaborative Partnerships for Cancer Prevention and Control Programs for American Indians and Alaska Natives is the title of the five-year grant that CDC has awarded Native American Cancer Research. The title is reflective of the scope of work addressed through this grant, specifically the regional meetings.

Strengthening and fostering state and tribal partnerships.
Increasing AI/AN participation in cancer prevention and control planning efforts.
Building infrastructure and coalitions.
Identifying unique and common gaps in AI/AN communities.
Finding opportunities and new strategies.
Addressing gaps.
Acknowledge that each regional is in a different partnership phase.

Planning Committee recruited through meetings, letters, nominations and “moccasin telegraph”.
Planning Committee and meeting attendees represent:
– Cancer related tribal programs (BCCEDP, CRC, CCC)
– Indian Health Service and other health providers
– AI/AN elders and traditional healers
– State/Local Departments of Health
– Non-federally recognized tribes
– Non-governmental organizations

“From nothing to noteworthy: The development of a cancer plan.”
The above quote is from a woman who is the member of a tribe who participated in one of the meetings. At the end of the meeting, after meeting representatives from the state health department, and discussing plans for the state health department to help her develop a cancer plan for her IHS unit, she said already had a title for her experience, “From nothing to noteworthy: The development of a cancer plan” . Her tribe does not receive any funds from CDC and this a great example of the intention of this grant.
