1 Do 1st: Draw the picture below
Do 1st: Draw the picture below. Then, write three sentences describing the picture. NOTE: If you were absent yesterday, check the wall for your missing assignments!

2 What is a Trait? A trait is a characteristic that describes you
Traits can be inherited (from your genetics) or acquired (something you learned.) During genetics, we will be learning about inherited traits.

3 Which of the following are inherited?
The Shape of you nose? Your favorite color? Your height? Your temper? Your love of Takis? Your motivation? The color of your eyes? Your hair texture? Your ability to ride a bike? Your skin color? The amount of stuff you know? The size of your head? Your allergies? The color of your hair? Your weight? Your shoe size?

4 Which of the following are inherited?
The Shape of you nose? Your favorite color? Your height? Your temper? Your love of Takis? Your motivation? The color of your eyes? Your hair texture? Your ability to ride a bike? Your skin color? The amount of stuff you know? The size of your head? Your allergies? The color of your hair? Your weight? Your shoe size?

5 What determines inherited traits? What is heredity?
Inherited Traits are determined by your genetics…the information that was passed down in your DNA from your biological mother and your biological father. Heredity is the process of passing on genetic information from parents to offspring.

6 In Biology, how do we indicate inherited traits?
Alleles are variations of the same gene. In biology, we code the traits using letters. Remember in the Bill Nye: Genetics video when you saw different letters such as “R” and “B”? These letters represent alleles.

7 What is a phenotype? The phenotype are the observable characteristics of the organism…what you can see or what is expressed.

8 What is genotype? The genotype is the actual genetic make-up of the organism….it is ALL the genes the organism has, even the ones that are not expressed.

9

10 Dominant Vs. Recessive We can determine whether an allele is dominant or recessive. Here are some quick definitions: Dominant: A term that describes an allele that determines the phenotype of an individual organism when two different copies are present in the genotype. DOMINANT ALLELES ARE ALWAYS WRITTEN AS AN UPPERCASE LETTER.

11 Dominant Vs. Recessive We can determine whether an allele is dominant or recessive. Here are some quick definitions: Recessive: A term that describes an allele that is NOT expressed when combined with a dominant form of the gene. RECESSIVE ALLELES ARE ALWAYS WRITTEN AS A LOWER CASE LETTER.

12 Let’s Practice…Dominant or Recessive?
b? P? r? g? B? T? G? W?

13 Practice DOMINANT RECESSIVE DOMINANT RECESSIVE RECESSIVE DOMINANT
Mark which of the following are dominant: D d F f r G g y DOMINANT RECESSIVE DOMINANT RECESSIVE RECESSIVE DOMINANT RECESSIVE RECESSIVE

15 Practice Worksheet!

16 Homozygous Means…. Homozygous means that the alleles in the genotype are the same, either both dominant (LARGE letters) or recessive (SMALL letters). Examples: RR—HOMOZYGOUS DOMINANT rr—HOMOZYGOUS RECESSIVE AA—HOMOZYGOUS DOMINANT aa—HOMOZYGOUS RECESSIVE

17 Heterozygous means… Heterozygous means that the alleles in the genotype are different, with both a dominant & recessive allele. Examples: Rr—HETEROZYGOUS Aa—HETEROZYGOUS Bb—HETEROZYGOUS

18 Check for Understanding…
In your notebook, write down whether each of the following is Homozygous (HO) or Heterozygous (HE). AA Ff rr Gg HH Bb HO HE HO HE HO HE

19 Gregor Mendel He is the father of genetics. He worked with pea plants back in the 1800s. He was a very cool guy. Remember! The article I gave you was due today! What did you learn about him? Close reading & complete sentences!

22 Check for understanding…
Which of the following is a genotype? Brown Hair Bb Green Eyes Huntington’s Disease Xx White Flowers Curly Hair cc Gg

23 Which of the following is a phenotype?
Blue Eyes ff Tall Plant Gg Wrinkled Peas Dark Skin Aa RR Attached Earlobes

24 SHORT TAIL LL? Ll? ll? LONG TAIL LONG TAIL One more try…
In cats, the allele for LONG tails (L) is dominant over the allele for SHORT tails (l). What would be the phenotype for the following genotypes? LL? Ll? ll? LONG TAIL LONG TAIL SHORT TAIL

25 Your Turn… ROUND ROUND WRINKLED WW? Ww? ww?
There are TWO possible alleles for seed shape in pea plants, WRINKLED or ROUND. Round Peas are Dominant -- W Wrinkled peas are recessive – w If a pea plant has the following genotype, would it have round or wrinkled peas? WW? Ww? ww? ROUND ROUND WRINKLED
