The Basics of Argumentation and the Toulmin Model

Argumentation Argumentation=the process of making an argument. (process of presenting reasons that support a claim.) Claim=conclusion or idea you want you audience to accept. 3 types of claims are: Fact, Value, and Policy.

Argumentation Two Steps to proving a claim: providing support, or evidence, and reasoning. Support/Evidence = facts, statistics, or statements by authority used to prove a claim. Reasoning = logical steps that relate the support to the claim.

Toulmin Model Data/Ground = the support. Warrant = the reasoning step.

Example without Reservations
Claim: You should buy the Bowflex. Data: The Bowflex Home Gym will help you burn fat. Warrant: Since you want to lose weight and feel great,

Example with Reservations
Claim: You should buy the Bowflex. Data: The Bowflex Home Gym will help you burn fat. Warrant: Since you want to lose weight and feel great, Reservations: Unless the Crossbow Home Gym will help you burn more fat and build more muscle.
