Go Math! Chapter 1 Lesson 1.3, day 1 Comparing Numbers 2016-17
Each student needs: -Math Notebook -Lesson 1.3 notebook page -colored pencils -glue stick -greater than, less than cards for each student -Lesson 1.1 and 1.2 review homework sheet (teacher created)
2
Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction
Over the last two days, we have answered two very important big questions. Here was the first…
3
How can you describe the value of a digit in a number?
Can someone remind us? We learned that the value of a digit depends on its place in a number. Let’s start with some…
4
How are the values of the 3’s related in the number
Math Talk How are the values of the 3’s related in the number 853,392? …math talk. Talk to your partner about the answers to these two questions. When you are finished, raise your hand. (time to talk) Would anyone like to share an answer for this first one? (the value of the 3 in the thousands place is 10 times the value of the 3 in the hundreds place) How about this second one? (the value of the 9 in 6,937 is 10 times the value of the 9 in 3,495) Now… How are the values of the 9’s related in the numbers 3,495 and 6,937?
5
Math Talk In which number is the value of the 3 10 times greater than the value of the 3 in 436,876? …talk to your partner about the answer to this question. Which one is it? * (green - to be 10 times greater, the 3 has to be one place to the left - in the hundred thousands place) Let’s use our Mighty Mathematician skills now to see if we agree or disagree with another student… 316,927 965,302 453,976
6
In the number 683,195 the value of the 8 is 10,000.
Can someone read what Jose is thinking? Let me see a * thumbs up if you agree or thumbs down if you disagree. Jose is incorrect. Can someone explain why? Jose named the place. The 8 is in the ten thousands place. But there is an 8 there, so that 8 has a value of 8 ten thousands, which is 80,000.
7
the digit 2 has the greatest value.
In the number 243,698 the digit 2 has the greatest value. Can someone read what Margo is thinking? Let me see a * thumbs up if you agree or thumbs down if you disagree. Margo is correct. Can someone explain why? The two is in the hundred thousands place so it has a value of 200,000. It is in the greatest place, so it has the greatest value. Which digit has the least value? (8) The other big question that we answered was…
8
How can you read and write numbers through hundred thousands?
Can someone remind us? We learned how to write 3 different forms of a number. What do you call…
9
603,040 standard form …a number written with digits and commas? *
What is each group of 3 digits called? (period) How many periods are in this number? (2) In this number, what digits are in the thousands period? How about the ones period? I can also write a number in… 603,040
10
six hundred three thousand, forty
word form 603,040 …word form. When you write the word form, you write down how you would read the number. Here is my standard form. What would be the word form of this number? * What word do you always say at the comma? What is the other form of a number? six hundred three thousand, forty
11
expanded form 603,040 To write the expanded form of a number, you need to list the value of each digit with a plus sign in between. Here is * my standard form. Let’s write the expanded form. What would I write first? * Next? * After that? * Let’s use some Mighty Mathematician powers… 600,000 + 3,000 + 40
12
The expanded form of 605,970 is 600,000 + 50,000 + 900 + 70
Can someone read what Sue is thinking? Let me see a * thumbs up if you agree or thumbs down if you disagree. Sue is incorrect. Can someone explain why? She wrote the wrong value for the 5. It should be 5,000.
13
The standard form of two hundred fifteen thousand, nine is 215,009
Can someone read what Jose is thinking? Let me see a * thumbs up if you agree or thumbs down if you disagree. Jose is correct. Can someone explain why? The word thousand is the comma. It needs to say 215 before the comma, and after the comma it needs to say 9. I need my two zeroes in order for it to say 9. Let’s do a little more…
14
Which is NOT another way to write 705,020?
Math Talk Which is NOT another way to write 705,020? 7 hundred thousands + 5 thousands + 2 tens …math talk. Talk to your partner about the answer to this question. Which one is not correct? * (blue – the value of the 2 is 20) Now… seven hundred five thousand, twenty 700, ,
15
Which number below is NOT the same as the all of the others?
Math Talk Which number below is NOT the same as the all of the others? 470,002 4 hundred thousands + 7 tens + 2 ones …talk to your partner about the answer to this question. Which one is not the same? * (green – it shows 7 tens instead of 7 ten thousands) Okay now that we reviewed the big things we’ve learned so far, let’s move on to a new type of problem… four hundred seventy thousand, two 400, ,
16
Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona had 651,028 visitors in July 2008 and 665,188 visitors in July In which year did the park have more visitors during the month of July? Can someone read this word problem? So, today we need to answer this….
17
How do I use place value to compare large numbers?
…big question. Can someone read it? Last year, in third grade, you learned about comparing and ordering numbers with up to 4-digits. Today, we’ll practice comparing greater numbers, all the way up through six digits. First of all, to compare numbers, you need to know your signs…
18
< Points Left What sign is this?
It is helpful to have some tricks to remember the signs. You can remember that the less than sign looks a bit like an * L that has been smooshed. Since Less starts with an L and left starts with an L, you can also remember that the less than sign * points to the left. What sign… Points Left
19
> …is this? You could imagine the greater than sign as part of the * G in greater. Some people think of an * alligator or Pac-man to remind them that the opening of the greater than sign is toward the larger number because these characters want to eat the larger number. Let’s see if you can use what you learned last year to make a page for our…

(points Left) At the top of your sheet is a reminder about the signs.
Let’s color in those signs to make them stand out. Color your greater than sign with * red. Color your less than sign with * blue. Under less than, let’s write * points left with blue. Some pairs of numbers, like these…
22
785 76 354 3,467 …are very easy to compare. When I say go, talk to your partner about how you can easily compare these sets of numbers to know which is greater or less. Go! What makes all of these sets of numbers easy to compare? (one number in each has more digits) We know that as we add places to the left on our place value chart, the value is 10 times greater, so the more places there are, the greater the number. Let’s fill in the first step to comparing numbers on our sheet… 23,675 787
23
> (points Left) places greater hundred thousands ten thousands
Read step 1 to yourself. Does anyone think they could fill in the blanks? * * Let’s do the example. What sign would go in the circle? * What is the greatest place in the first number? Let’s circle that with red…* What is the greatest place in the second number? Let’s circle that with blue…* Now let’s fill in the blanks… * * Sometimes, though, I might have numbers like this…
24
785 758 3,476 3,746 …to compare. In each of these, the two pairs of numbers have exactly the same number of places. Now what do I do? Talk to your partner to see if you can come up with a strategy. Then raise your hand. (share) Let’s fill in the second step to comparing numbers on our sheet… 23,675 23,671
25
> < (points Left) places greater hundred thousands ten thousands
Read step 2 to yourself. Does anyone think they can fill in the blanks? * * Let’s do the example. What is the greatest place in both numbers? If I compare place by place, what is the first place they are different? (thousands) Let’s circle the thousands digit in each one…* * What sign would go in the circle? * Does anyone think they could read the explanation and fill in the blanks? * * * One of the things we said that Mighty Mathematicians do is… greatest left < 5 hundred thousands 7 ten thousands 4 thousands 6 thousands

I can use math tools and explain why I chose them.
Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona had 651,028 visitors in July 2008 and 665,188 visitors in July In which year did the park have more visitors during the month of July? Tool 1: Use a Place Value Chart I can use math tools and explain why I chose them. …to use tools to help them. There are two tools that you can use to help you compare numbers. Let’s go back to our * Grand Canyon problem. One tool I could use to help me compare these numbers is * a place value chart. I could write both numbers in the chart… * * Then it is really easy to compare them. A second tool I could use is paper and pencil. I could * write the numbers on top of each other, lining up the places…* Once again, it is really easy to compare. What would be the answer to the word problem question? Now… Tool 2: Write the numbers on top of each other, lining up the places. , , 651,028 665,188
27
Let’s Practice! …let’s practice comparing some sets of numbers.
I am going to give you a greater than or less than card. I would like you to hold up the one that would go in the circle in each of the problems that I show. As Mighty Mathematicians, we have to be able to explain our thinking, so for each one, I am also going to ask for a volunteer to come up and use place value to explain why the answer is correct. Feel free to use tools to help…you can write the numbers on top of each other on your Think Pad or make yourself a place value chart on your Think Pad.
