1
Microscopes & Cell Theory
2
Purpose of Microscopes
Function: to make an enlarged image of an object
3
Types of Microscopes Simple: has only one lens
Compound: has 2 or more lenses Compound light: passes a beam of light through an object and then the lenses
4
Electron microscope: uses a beam of electrons so we can see things that are “too small” to see with other microscopes.
5
Magnification: refers to the microscope’s power to increase an object’s apparent size
Resolution: refers to the microscope’s power to show detail clearly
6
Total Magnification: obtained by multiplying the objective by the eyepiece
EX. Objective = 20X Eyepiece = 10X 20 x10 200X
7
Zacharias Janssen (1595) put two magnifying glasses together in a tube to make the first compound microscope
8
Robert Hooke (1665) Observed thin slice of cork Saw “little boxes”
Coined the term cell
9
Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1675) was the first person to observe living cells
10
Matthias Schleiden (1838) all plants are made up of cells
Studied plants & determined all plants are made up of cells
11
Theodor Schwann (1839) all animals are made up of cells
Studied animals & determined all animals are made up of cells
12
Rudolph Virchow (1850’s) Discovered that all cells come from pre-existing cells “Cells divide to form new cells”
13
The Cell Theory 1. All organisms are made up of one or more cells.
2. The cell is the basic unit of organization in organisms. 3. All cells come from cells that already exist.
14
Microscope Care: Always store covered
Always carry with 2 hands by the arm and the base Never force knobs Keep objects clear of desk and cords Teacher demonstrates how to hold the microscope, where the lens paper is located and how to use it. Students will be invited to turn the knobs and observe the stage as it moves up and down. Teacher will demonstrate how to store the microscope.
15
Eyepiece Body Tube Arm Stage Base Revolving Nosepiece Objective Lens
Stage Clips Coarse Adjustment Students will be identifying the parts on the microscopes at their desks as we go along and what their functions are. Diaphragm Fine Adjustment Light source Base
