Warm up 12-7-17 Balance and List the type of reaction
C3H O > CO H2O 2. What is the percent yield when you made g of ZnCl in lab but expected to get 36g? 1 a) 2Al + 3Pb(NO3)2 ---> 3Pb + 2Al(NO3)3 b) C6H8 + 5O2 ---> 3CO2 + 4H2O Agenda Turn in lab Take QUIZ Notes Unit 5-4 Mole Poster Homework Dec 15 – Test & notebook check Dec 15 – 3rd extra credit Canvas Dec 15 - Deadline to retake quizzes & redo online HW online

Balance and List the type of reaction
C3H O > CO H2O 2. What is the percent yield when you made 30 g of ZnCl in lab but expected to get 36g?
3
Quiz Topics (5 questions total): Evidences of chemical change (5-1)
Balancing equations (5-2) Types of reactions (5-3) Percent yield calculation (5-3) -You’ll need a half sheet of paper -You may use a calculator (no cell phone) 1 a) 2Al + 3Pb(NO3)2 ---> 3Pb + 2Al(NO3)3 b) C6H8 + 5O2 ---> 3CO2 + 4H2O 2. 25% x 80g = 20g
4
Unit 5-4 Notes Moles
5
STOICHIOMETRY The quantitative aspects of chemical reactions.
Precise measurement, a recipe for chemical reactions Anyone that cook or bake? Different recipe will give different flavor even though the ingredients are very similar to each other. (2 cups of floor vs 3 cups) Stoich is a recipe for making chemical reactions.
6
How do we count? 1 “dozen” donuts = ____ donuts
1 “century” = _____ year 1 “foot” = ______ inches
7
A “Mole” Mole = amount of a substance abbreviate as “mol”
1 mole = x 1023 particles Avogadro’s Number Based on the weight of carbon-12 atoms. 1 mole of any substance is equal to 6.02 x 10 23 1776 – 1856
8
Just How Big is a Mole? Enough soft drink cans to cover the surface of the earth to a depth of over 200 miles. 602,200,000,000,000,000,000,000 unpopped popcorn kernels and spread them across the United States of America, the country would be covered in popcorn to a depth of over 9 miles. If we were able to count atoms at the rate of 10 million per second, it would take about 2 billion years to count the atoms in one mole.
9
Molar Mass The mass of 1 mole of a substance (not 1 atom)
Units is gram / mol Molar Mass vs. Atomic Mass Copper Copper 6.022 x 1023 atoms 1 atom 63.5 g/mol amu
10
Calculate Molar Mass What is the molar mass of Carbon?
What is the molar mass of CO2? What is the molar mass of sugar? Sugar = C6H12O6 Calculate the mass of a compound C = 12g x 6 H = 1g x 12 O = 16 x 6
11
Check-In How many atoms are in 1 mole of carbon? 6.022 x 1023 atoms
How many molecules are in 1 mole of H2O? 6.022 x 1023 molecules What is the atomic mass of carbon? Atomic mass= 12 amu (1 atom of carbon) What is the molar mass of carbon? Molar mass= 12 g/mol What is the molar mass of H2O 18 g/mol Ask students to write down the answers TED ed mole
12
Percent Composition The percentage by mass of each element in a compound Equation: Mass of element x 100 = % comp. Total mass
13
Examples What is the percent composition of oxygen in Al2O3?
What is the percent composition of each element in acetic acid C2H4O2 % composition C = % composition H = % composition O = Acetic acid in fruit
14
Mole Project (10 points) Individual Project Due Next Class -Create a “mole” theme poster -Hand drawn and Color -Include a 3 key terms from today’s note. Example theme: Moleo and Juliet Molethello Guacamole Moledamort Moleius Caesar Whack-a-moley Angry Mole Pepto Bismole Pikamole InstaMole Don’t do Molester
15
Assignments Summary: What is a mole? How is a molar mass different from atomic mass? TURN IN LAB Dec 15 – last day to make up absent work Dec 15 – last extra credit due Canvas Dec 15 – deadline for online HW redo & quiz retake
