Technology Supported Learning: Empowering Teaching and Learning with Technology Prof. Douglas R. Vogel Chair Professor of Information Systems City University of Hong Kong Date: Jan 21, 2011, 11 am-12:30 pm, Venue: L105 Abstract To students, technology supported learning is a continuing innovation and an expectation, based on their existing pervasive use of technology and social networking. Faculty, however, have quite a different background and often view technology supported learning as a disruptive innovation. Not uncommon is concern for if, when and how technology should be made available and effectively integrated in a pedagogically sensitive fashion and what intended (and unintended) consequences might prevail. Institutions worldwide are struggling with reward systems issues and support options. This presentation will reflect over a decade of experience in getting technology supported learning used and useful in Hong Kong and beyond. Special attention will be given to issues of faculty development and institutional change. Biography Douglas Vogel is Chair Professor of Information Systems (IS) at the City University of Hong Kong and an Association of Information Systems (AIS) Fellow. He received his M.S. in Computer Science from U.C.L.A. and his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the University of Minnesota where he was also research coordinator for the MIS Research Center. He has published widely and been recognized as the most cited IS author in Asia Pacific. Professor Vogel's teaching and research interests bridge the business and academic communities in addressing issues of information system creation and impact on aspects of interpersonal communication, group problem solving, cooperative learning, and multi-cultural team productivity. His particular focus emphasizes integration of audio, video, and data in interactive distributed group support.
