1. Describe the way Krebs spends his days. 2. What is Krebs’s reaction to reading a history of the battles he fought in? 3. What makes Krebs decide to leave home? 4. By the time Krebs returned, his hometown had quit “the greeting of heroes” and “the reaction had set in.” What is this reaction? How does it affect Krebs? 5. What does Krebs mean by wanting “to live along without consequences”? Why might he feel that way? 6. What does Kreb’s statement “You did not need a girl unless you thought about them” reveal about how he adapted to the hardships of war? How might such an adjustment affect his life at home? 7. Describe the conflicts revealed in the conversation between Mrs. Krebs and Harold at the end of the story. What losses on Harold’s part does the talk reveal? 8.
