1 Alter Ego Self Portrait
An Art 10 Sketchbook Assignment

2 If you could be anyone else, who would you be??

3 An alter ego (Latin, "the other I") is a second self, which is believed to be distinct from a person's normal or original personality. A person who has an alter ego is said to lead a double life. What is an Alter Ego? A distinct meaning of alter ego can be found in literary analysis, wherein it describes characters in different works who are psychologically similar, or a fictional character whose behavior, speech or thoughts intentionally represent those of the author. It's also used to design the best friend of another character in a story. Information from Wikipedia 

4 Is your alter ego someone already famous, ordinary, or someone infamous? Would you adopt the persona of a historical figure, a character from mythology or fiction, or someone from everyday life with different interests from you? Would you change genders or simply your wardrobe? We have all identified with other personalities.

11 Your Assignment…

12 Consider the outward signs that define a person?
How does one’s gender, culture, religion, profession, age, class, etc. affect who she/he is? How do stereotypes affect how a person is perceived? How do we recognize each other AND how do we recognize when someone is pretending to be someone else? For this assignment, you will create a drawing in your sketchbook that represents your alter ego. Research the style of clothing, hair, makeup, stature, and environment that would be typical of this kind of person. Using a photograph of yourself, create a portrait of yourself as your alter ego considering the above ideas. Cut the photograph in half and paste it into your sketchbook. THEN, using what you’ve researched, draw the other side of your face that is to represent your alter ego. You are also to include a background! You may use collage and drawing for your background to help highlight both your “normal” self on one side, and your alter ego on the other side.
