10
Summary Know the course content Access the information for each area
Make a one page product for each topic 4 British essays, 4 Germany, 4 Scottish Issues = 12 sheets
11
Section 2: The Essays Key points 40/ 60 marks in paper or 2/3 of grade
You must do two essays, one British, one Germany You should do these first, before the Scottish section You must prepare for four essays in each section to be guaranteed a question If you take a gamble on a question coming up i.e. Nazis in Power, you may not be able to answer a question in that section Do your strongest essay first Spend no more than 45m on each
12
The three BIG MISTAKES BIG MISTAKE ONE Reading the question incorrectly and therefore writing the wrong essay BIG MISTAKE TWO Writing a narrative (big long story of facts) BIG MISTAKE THREE Doing only one essay (or one brilliant one and one shocker)
13

Rise Nazis To what extent had Nationalism grown in the German states by 1851? Nationalism – haven’t done yet To what extent was propaganda the main reason for the Nazi maintenance of power ? Nazis in Power
17
BIG MISTAKE TWO Writing a narrative (big long story of facts)
3 part intro – 2 marks Knowledge (facts) - 6 marks Analysis (explaining/ answering the question) - 6 marks Evaluation – 4 marks 3 step conclusion - 2 marks
18
A few calculations to consider…
‘Essays’ which just recount facts – max 6 marks (x2) = 12 marks, 12/60 = 20% = No Award Key message = you will not pass based on knowledge alone Essays which have a 3 part intro, conclusion, 6 facts = 10 marks (x2) = 20 marks (plus say 10/20 in Scottish Section) = 30/60, 50% = C Key message = by simply structuring your essays well and knowing facts you can pass Higher History 3 part intro + 6 facts + 4 basic analysis + 3 part conclusion = 14/20 = A Key message = by writing a well structured essay with basic analysis you can achieve an A in Higher history.
19
BIG MISTAKE THREE Doing only one essay (or one brilliant one and one shocker)
This is just a terrible idea. Don’t do it. No good candidates ever do this.
20
Essay Revision Group 4 – How Successful were the Labour Reforms ? (5 factors) Group 5 – Why did the Nazis rise to power up to 1933? (4 factors) Group 6 – Why did the Nazis maintain power ? (5 factors)
21
Section 3 – The Scottish/Source Section
Four Issues Three Question Types (Evaluate the Usefulness, Comparison, How Fully) So only 3 issues will be examined but you cannot prepare for this Worth 20 marks or 1/3 of paper Do this last – in last 45 mins
22
Two things you need to know
The content of each issue i.e. the facts Use your mind maps to do this Roughly 3 facts per mandatory content area is plenty The question structures You need to just learn these and apply them on the day Practice using past paper questions
23
Why do people lose marks?
Don’t learn the structures & lose marks (i.e. no judgement in a how fully loses you 7 marks) Don’t leave enough time for this section (equality!) Don’t learn their stuff & therefore have no own knowledge to contribute (no excuses here)
24
How Fully – 9 marks The Source gives a fairly good description of ________ x 1 The source says “…” This means that …. X3 The source fails to mention … x6
25
Evaluate the usefulness– 6 marks
Origin & Purpose (4) Who, when, what, This makes it more/ less useful because… Source Content (2) The source says “…” This is useful as it shows… Content Omission (2) The source fails to mention ….. This makes it less useful
