1 LT- Today, I can apply my observation and inference skills to determine the relationship of chromosomes, DNA, and genes by analyzing diagrams and citing information from texts. How do chromosomes, DNA, and genes relate? Do Now- What is an observation vs an inference?

7 Genetics- the study of genes
Genetics- the study of genes. Nucleus- contains the chromosomes and controls cell function. Chromosomes- hold the genetic material. DNA- a molecule that contains genes. Genes- contains the codes for creating proteins. Proteins are what make us (our traits). Nitrogen bases- they make up the gene Heredity- the passing of genes from one generation to the next.

8 Do these genes make the same protein or different? Explain.

9 The Goal for Today is to understand how chromosomes, DNA, genes, and nitrogen bases relate.
Expressing your understanding in: Drawing diagrams Writing Concept maps

10 1) Do Now Copy the observations and inferences that we have done so far. 2) Analyze Diagrams: How do chromosomes, DNA, and genes relate? Can we complete anymore inferences? 3) Read- “Chromosomes, DNA, and Genes: Tiny Things that Have a Huge Effect on Who We Are! 4) Video- “Genetics 101” PARENT LETTERS MUST BE COMPLETE

11 Chromosome, DNA and Genes Summary Chromosomes come in pairs
One from each parent There are dark and light bands on the chromosomes These are different genes(example: eye color, nose shape, etc.) Chromosomes are different lengths There are a different number of genes on different chromosomes and genes vary in size.

12 Different species have a different number of chromosomes Because they do not look exactly the same, there are different genes in their makeup There is an X and Y Chromosome These are the sex chromosomes (XX=girl, XY= boy)

13 Genetic material if found in the nucleus of the cells.
A chromosome is a neatly packaged DNA strand. DNA is made up of many genes. Genes are made up of (nitrogen) bases.

Leave a page to add more information for the last learning target. LT- Today, I can identify organelles of a plant cell by observing specimens under a microscope. How do I observe a specimens under a microscope? What organelles can I see in a plant cell under a microscope? Do Now: Label your structures on you concept map from 1 (smallest) to 5 (largest). Review the relationships of the 5 structures

15

16 Chromosome- Neatly packaged DNA strand
Chromosome- Neatly packaged DNA strand. There is one DNA strand in a chromosome. Chromosomes come in pairs. The chromosomes of a pair have the same genes and the same number of genes. DNA- DNA molecules contain genes which direct how an organism’s body is built and maintained. Gene- Different genes determine your traits. Genes are instructions for making proteins. Proteins make up you.

17 Check your understanding: Steven states that he looks more like his mother than his father, therefore he has received more genes from his mom than his dad. Based on what we have learned so far about chromosomes, DNA, and genes is his statement true? Use the diagrams, notes, and videos that we have used in class for your citations and explaining how your citations support your answer. Use ACE to answer the question. With 2 citations.

18 LT- Today, I can apply my understanding of chromosomes, DNA, and genes by comparing and contrasting what I have learned from text and videos to my model. How can I apply my understanding of the structures of a chromosome to build a model, create a concept map, and to complete my “Understanding the Structure of DNA Lab”?

19

20 The first Test in Genetics is an Understanding of the structures test.
Test Topics Level so of organization of living things Cellular Respiration Systems of the body that work together in cellular respiration Relationship between nucleus, chromosomes, DNA, genes, nitrogen bases, nucleic acids, and nucleotides

21 X and Y chromosome pair counts 21
X and Y chromosome pair counts 21. How do the number of chromosomes and DNA relate? How can this help you? 22. How do the number of DNA and nucleic acids relate? How can this help you? 23. Look at the structure of a nucleotide. What are its parts? What would you want to know in order to determine the number of nucleotides? 25. Hint: things are grouped together or paired because of similarities You need to use things needed for cellular respiration to answer this question.

22 8th Grade Science Exam Review questions: 24 Which type of air mass forms over the ocean near the equator? (1) moist and warm (3) dry and warm (2) moist and cool (4) dry and cool 27 Which weather condition commonly occurs along a cold front? (1) clear skies (2) precipitation (3) warm temperatures (4) dry air
