RWS 100 – 9/13/17 - Testa Claims and Evidence
2
Essay 1 Questions about Essay 1? Or the class? Or life in general?
3
File Example I showed students my own save files and how I make multiple saves so I don’t lose my writing. Also, it showed how I revise, how meticulously I revise, and stressed the importance of revision.
4
Claim A claim is to assert that something is the case.
It is not evidence, a fact, a statistic, a story, an example. It is a statement, an assertion, a staking of a point.
5
Evidence Evidence is factual information relevant to and supportive of the author’s claims.
6
Types of Evidence Numerical (including statistics)
Experimental/Research Study results/observations Historical and current events and examples Individual examples Physical evidence Expert testimony Personal anecdotes
7
Evidence Each piece of evidence has strengths and weaknesses. Keep this in mind when you write your essay. Specificity/vagueness. Reliability. Relevance to claim/argument. Representative. Current. Accurate. Alternative interpretations.
8
Thompson Claims handout.
Mark whether main argument, major claim, small claim, or not a claim at all.
9
Group Work Put into groups to find the MAJOR CLAIM, evidence which supports it, and then evaluate the evidence. There will only be one major claim in section I provide for each group. Your job is to find the major claim and be able to explain/describe it, especially in relation to the main argument/text as a whole. Then look for the different pieces of evidence in that particular section which supports the claim. Identify the type of evidence and why it supports the claim. There is A LOT of evidence.
10
Group Work You will write this on one piece of paper for each group.
Please put your team name at the top. You will present your findings in front of the class. (omg) You can designate one speaker if you want to be mean. Or all talk. You must also identify one song by the team name.
