2 Conflict Conflict is the struggle or clash between opposing characters or forces. Conflicts may be external: firefighter vs. fire or internal: firefighter vs. his or her fear

3 Conflict An external conflict is a struggle between a character and an outside force. two characters a character and a group a character and something nonhuman – like nature or technology.

4 Conflict An internal conflict is a struggle that takes place within a character’s mind or heart. Characters struggle with themselves to make decisions. Characters deal with mixed feelings or emotions

5 Types of Conflict Character vs. Character (Man vs. Man) Man vs. Nature
Man vs. Society Man vs. Self Man vs. Technology

6 Conflict: Character vs. Character -or- Man vs. Man
This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with another character, human or not human. In The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Charlotte and Captain Jaggery literally struggle to the death.

7 Conflict: Character vs. Nature -or- Man vs. Nature
This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with the forces of nature, which serve as the antagonist. In Greyling, Greyling dives into the sea to save his father from a storm.

8 Conflict: Character vs. Society -or- Man vs. Society
This type of conflict has the main character in conflict with a larger group: a community, society, culture, etc. In The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Charlotte “battled” against the rules of society expected for young girls of wealth in the 1820’s.

9 Conflict: Character vs. Self -or- Man vs. Self
In this type of conflict, the main character experiences some kind of inner conflict. In A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is forced to face the consequences of his attitude and actions. After facing his life, he chooses to make a dramatic change in his outlook.

10 Conflict: Man vs. Technology
This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with man-made machinery or “artificial intelligence”. In Hatchet, Brian struggles to fly and land a Cessna plane. He’s never flown before and the airplane’s fuel won’t last forever…
