Exposition Exposition - the beginning of the story
Introduces the following: Characters Setting Introduces conflict (only a little) Example: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: Main Character’s Introduced Setting - England and Hogwarts Conflict Hinted at - Voldemort and Snape

Rising Action The conflict develops
This is the bulk of the story (the longest part) The story becomes more exciting Example: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: School continues and the trio think Snape is up to something. They find out about the Sorcerer’s Stone . They think Snape is after the stone.

Climax Turning point of the story A decision or choice is usually made
Can be the big moment of the story Example: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone They decide to go through the trapdoor They face the obstacles Harry walks into the last room to fight Quirrell and he finds the Sorcerer’s Stone

Falling Action The conflict is resolved (ended) Loose ends are tied up
All events here lead to the Resolution Example: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Harry is rescued from the dungeon Dumbledore explains what happened after Harry passed out Harry goes to the feast Gryffindor wins the house cup The students get ready to go home

Resolution The end of the story All action stops
Example: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Harry leaves the train station with the Dursleys.

Types of Characters Protagonist: The main character
Often the good guy of the story Usually changes by the end of the story Antagonist: Often the “bad guy” Causes a problem for the main character

Types of Characters Dynamic: Often main characters
Undergoes a change in personality by the end of the story Static: Does not change throughout the story

Point of View How the story is told 3 different types: First person
Second person Third person

First Person The narrator is a character in the story
Uses words such as: I Me Our We Us Example: “Are we going to the store today”? I asked.

Second Person Typically not used The author is talking to the reader
Uses words such as: You Your Yours Example: You should always wash your hands before you eat.

Third Person Most commonly used Author or narrator tells the story
Limited - narrator only knows the point of view of one character Omniscient - narrator knows everything Uses words such as: He She They His Her Or character’s names Example: “Can you follow Snape?” asked Harry.

Types of conflict Internal Conflict - Occurs within a character
Typically a choice Provides a lesson or a moral Examples: Jealousy Choosing between honesty and cheating External Conflict - A character is pitted against an outside force Provides excitement or suspense Examples: Nature A physical object Another character

Man vs Man Also known as “person vs person”
External conflict (happens on the outside) Examples: Harry Potter vs Voldemort You yell at another person

Man vs Self An internal conflict
Person has to make a choice or decision Examples: You see someone cheat on a test and you have to decide what to tell the teacher You have to decide what outfit to wear in the morning

Man vs Nature Person against natural elements
Can be a storm or an animal Example: You have to make your way home in a hurricane. You are in the woods and have to escape a bear.
