13. Concentration
The central idea of my concentration focusses on the contour and figure of the female body expressed through an atmosphere of emotion rather than the traditional use of facial expression. Each piece has a surrealistic or abstract element that conveys this emotion and integrates the figure into the composition.

14. In the beginning I focused on showing emotion through figures as Grecian statues(image 1, 3, and 4), female bodies frozen as if captured in a single moment. The lack of movement emphasizes the form of the body. In image 1, for example, the background elements such as the repetition of weeping flowers and dark folds stress the figure's somber tone. In contrast image 4 conveys a more lively appearance through outstretched arms and brighter colors. Images 5 through 8 transition to more complex compositions with the figure interacting with its surroundings to a greater degree. Lastly, I wanted to end my concentration by pushing the limits on my ideas and convolution of the figure and background. The concept of Image 9 is based around the qualities and work of Salvador Dali. I stretched the surrealistic elements and used that experience to expose the figure and evoke a grim sense of pain and suffering. This emotion also alludes to the biblical symbol of the nail. In image 10 my study of Lucian Freud allowed me to express the beauty of the female form through the palpable nature of skin. In my culminating piece (image 12), conceptual and emotional possibilities were stressed by creating a figure whose skin becomes like wax, melting and wasting away like an extinguished flame of a burnt out candle.
