1 Thank you for not chewing gum or anything else 
Materials: Agenda Pencil Notebook/Folder April 28, 2016 Agenda: Bell work BP Eclipses BP Tides Moon/Eclipse Simulation Casting Shadows Worksheet Daily Objective: Today we will learn about the phases of the moon & what causes eclipses Daily Question: Which phase happens after a full moon?

2 Eclipse: An event which one object in space casts a shadow on another object.
Eclipses are named for what is being blocked from view. Lunar Eclipse: Earth comes directly between the Sun and a Full Moon. Resulting in the moon being darkened by the Earth’s shadow. Solar Eclipse: When the New Moon comes directly between the Sun and the Earth. Part or all of the Sun is blocked from view by the Moon. Umbra: Smaller, inner shadow – area of total eclipse Penumbra: Larger, outer shadow – area of partial eclipse Waxing = light on right (growing) Waning = light on left (shrinking) Crescent = less than half Gibbous = more than half

3 Lunar Eclipse Solar Eclipse

4 Waxing = light on right (growing)
Waning = light on left (shrinking) Crescent = less than half Gibbous = more than half

5 New Moon Not visible Beginning of cycle Phase one
Sun is behind the Moon

6 Waxing Crescent Waxing means “growing” Waxes during 1st half of cycle
Phase 2 Small Sliver on right visible

7 First Quarter Entire Right Side visible 1/4 of the cycle is complete
Phase 3

8 Waxing Gibbous More than ½ but less than all is visible Still Waxing
Phase 4

9 Full Moon ENTIRE near side visible ½ way through the cycle Phase 5

10 Waning Gibbous Waning means “Shrinking”
Less and less of the nearside is visible Small sliver on right missing Phase 6

11 Last Quarter Entire left side of moon visible Completed ¾ of the cycle
Phase 7

12 Waning Crescent Less than ½ is still visible Still Waning
Last phase before returning to New Moon. Cycle will repeat
