Sojourner Truth By: Ally Overbeek

Introduction A brave woman named “Sojourner Truth” was a brave and strong woman even though she lived her life as a slave. She was a big part in the Civil Rights Movement. I don’t know if she was there exactly but, she was a big part leading up to it though. She was famous for her speeches and quotes. Sojourner Truth, is a great woman and she fought for her freedom.

Adult When Sojourner was an adult, she fell in love with Robert, but the owners saw that Robert had been sneaking over to see Sojourner, and beat him badly then sold him to another slave owner. Sojourner was sad, and then she finally agreed to marry Thomas and they had 5 children.

Baby Sojourner was born to Betsy and James Hardenbergh in 1797 in Hurley, New York. They decided to name her Isabella “Belle” Hardenbergh. She had many brothers and sisters abut most of them got sold to slave traders and were taken away.

Childhood Isabella grew a strong hatred for slavery because it tore so many loving families apart. When Isabella was three, Johannes Hardenbergh died. His son, Charles, was her new owner. Isabella, her parents, and her younger brother Peter lived with other slaves in the cold, wet, one-roomed cellar of Charles Hardenbergh’s house.
