Strategy: Model how to annotate a text.
We must teach all students how to annotate a text. Annotation User Guide (See Handouts/Pick One to Use) Share a good and bad example of an annotated article with students. Model (Think Aloud/YouTube Video) Peer review of annotation (See Handouts) Repeat! Your Turn! aiken county public school district

Strategy: Critical Reader Response Journals
Louise Rosenblatt (1994) has helped educators understand that readers make meaning through a sort of “dialogue,” an exchange between the reader and a text. Readers arrive at meaning through their associative and personal responses, and these responses are shaped by cultural and social contexts in which reading takes place. Both feeling and thought are legitimate components of literary interpretation, and texts demand intellectual responses as well as personal (Rosenblatt, 1995). aiken county public school district

Strategy: Critical Reader Response Journals
Go over reader response handout with students. Show students a good and bad example of reader responses. Have students read the article. Allow students a chance to respond to the article (provides a personal connection). Provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their responses to the article. (Helps them discover bias, where their opinions come from, challenge author, etc.) Gives them an opportunity to reflect and think critically. aiken county public school district

Strategy: Reading like a Content Expert
A Social Studies Perspective: Engage students in historical inquiry that extends beyond writing of opinions and feelings aiken county public school district
12
Strategy: Reading like a Content Expert
The Steps: 1) Establish relevant background knowledge and pose a central historical question. Establishing background knowledge is the first step in the inquiry process. This background will frame the central historical question, and motivate students to investigate the documents that accompany the lesson. This can be done through a mini-lectures, short video clips, or an included timeline of events provided to students that they can reference as they read the documents. aiken county public school district
13
Strategy: Reading like a Content Expert
2) Students read documents, answer guiding questions or complete a graphic organizer. Students will engage in different activities as they read and interpret the documents. 3) Whole-class discussion about a central historical question. Most important part, but unfortunately with time constraints often bypassed. It is through whole-class discussion that students begin to see the multiple interpretations that history can have using the same piece(s) of evidence. Through practice students gain an understanding of their role as knowledge-makers in the classroom. aiken county public school district
14
Strategy: Reading like a Content Expert
Practice: Essential Question: What role of indifference did the world play as seen through Elie Wiesel throughout the Holocaust? Can you draw connections to similar roles of indifference in today's world? aiken county public school district
15
Strategy: Socratic Seminar
After students have annotated, critically responded, and read like a content expert allow students the opportunity to discuss the article. Allow students to develop their own questions for the Socratic seminar (see handout) Show students a video example of a successful Socratic seminar. Break the students into an inner and outer circle. Outer circle observes, takes notes, and provides feedback. Inner circle keeps the conversation going and listens without interrupting when the outer circle gives feedback. The circles then switch roles. aiken county public school district
16
Strategy: Sensory Sensations
Provide a visual for students that relates directly to the article that you are reading. Photos, Videos, Songs, Audio Recording of Speeches, Artifacts aiken county public school district
17
Tips for Strategies Have students master one strategy at a time. Provide multiple chances for practice. Students do not view reading as an active process, we need to show them that it is an active process. Provide background knowledge when necessary, do not assume. Provide images to help students visualize the text. Scaffold the complexity of texts. (start small and easy) aiken county public school district
