1 Objectives for Today’s Lesson
Identify and define the terms genre and mystery. Recognize and identify the elements of a mystery. Compare and contrast different examples of mysteries.

3 What does the word genre mean?
Genre is a certain kind or type of literature. These types of literature include both non-fiction and fiction.

4 Non-Fiction Types of the non-fiction genre include: Biography
Autobiography Biography Informational Text

5 Fiction Types of fiction genre include: Historical Fiction
Realistic Fiction Fantasy Science Fiction Folktales, Myths, and Fables Mysteries

6 Mysteries A Genre of Literature

7 What is a mystery? Mysteries are often filled with suspense, but they are also puzzles. Part of the fun of a mystery is matching wits with the criminal; and figuring out “whodunit.”

8 Elements of a Mystery A crime or unexplained event

9 Elements of a Mystery One or more detectives trying to solve the crime

10 Elements of a Mystery Clues or evidence of what really happened

11 Elements of a Mystery Suspects who might have committed the crime

12 Elements of a Mystery Detective work, such as finding evidence and questioning witnesses and suspects

13 Elements of a Mystery A solution to the mystery – “Whodunit.”

Crime – an action that is against the law

15 Vocabulary Used in a Mystery
Suspect – someone thought to be responsible for a crime

Alibi – a claim that a person accused of a crime was somewhere else when the crime was committed

Detective – one who investigates crimes, usually for or with the police

Witness – a person who has seen or heard something

Clue – something that helps solve a problem or mystery

Evidence – information and facts that help prove something or make you believe something is true

21 Vocabulary Used in Mystery
Solution - the answer to a problem; an explanation = Arrest - to stop or hold someone by the power of law

22 Small Group Assignment
Choose one mystery from your reading book to read aloud with your group. The Case of the Earthenware Pig pp The Sticks of Truth pp Complete the graphic organizer by answering the questions for the mystery your group has chosen. As a group read and solve the mystery, The Coaster Caper.
