Objective: Students will learn the scientific method and will be able to apply the scientific method. Students will be able to make good hypotheses.
4
Many of the scientific discoveries utilized the scientific method.
The Scientific Method is the (1) logical steps that scientists use to solve problems Many of the scientific discoveries utilized the scientific method. Video (1:33 to 2:33)
5
Six Steps! (2) State the question (3) Gather information (4) Formulate a hypothesis: an educated guess
6
Six Steps! (5) Perform experiments to test whether the hypothesis is true (6)Analyze data (7)Draw conclusions from the data
7
S: State the Question Before you begin an experiment, you must first ask a scientific question. Make sure it’s testable Ex: How does eating Wheaties effect how much weight I can lift
8
Before you make a hypothesis, you should research your question
G: Gather Information Before you make a hypothesis, you should research your question Ex: Read all the research you can find on Wheaties
9
F: Formulate a hypothesis
A Hypothesis is: a suggested explanation about the question you asked. A hypothesis must always be: Testable Show cause and effect Be based on earlier research
10
P: Perform Experiments
This is when you actually perform your experiment You must have materials and a step by step procedure
11
A: Analyze Data During this step, you should organize your data into tables and charts. Then you should make graphs so you can analyze your experiment
12
D: Draw Conclusions You decide if your hypothesis was correct.
Ex: In conclusion eating Wheaties does cause a person to gain muscle mass making it possible for them to become stronger.
13
Making a good hypothesis
A. A good Hypothesis must be I: Based on earlier research II: A complete sentence III: Show cause and effect IV: Contain a reason to support your prediction

Making a good hypothesis
B. Cause and effect: I: Cause: The reason something happens II: Effect: The result of what happens III: A Hypothesis PREDICTS that cause and effect 1.) Example: Sunlight Causes plants to grow 2.) Example: Plants that get less sunlight will grow less
24
Road Check: Make a good hypothesis for the following scientific questions
1.) Scientific Question: Does sunlight increase the rate at which a plant will grow? A GOOD Hypothesis:

Sewer Lice How does dirty water become clean water once it gets to the water plant? SEWER LICE! Cleans up sewage water Found in the southern parts of the Mississippi River
31
Sewer Lice Great source of protein May be able to solve world hunger
32
Sewage Lice Answer the following two questions:
Write down your observations on the dirty and clean water: Make a hypothesis on how the sewer lice cleans the dirty water: How can you test your hypothesis?
