1. Lymphoma. Malignant lymphomas may occur in the brain, either as primary lesions or as secondary (metastatic) lesion in patients with systemic lymphoma. Although they can occur spontaneously in apparently immunocompetent hosts, primary central nervous system lymphomas are especially common in patients compromised by HIV infection or other forms of immunosuppression. Most of these lymphomas are high grade non-Hodgkin B-cell tumors. Many such cases are associated with the presence of Epstein-Barr virus infection.
