Turn and talk to your group of three or four. What identities do you have in common? What identities are different? How do these identities contribute to who we are as people?

4. Personal Identity vs. Social Identity
Personal Identities: Individual traits that make up who you are, including your birth order, hobbies, interests (favorite music, food, hobbies, etc), experiences, talents, abilities and personal choices.
Social Identities: Primarily group identities, aspects of ourselves where we belong to a particular group (gender, age, religion). These could include common history, shared experiences, day-to-day interactions, etc.
Does one of these identities shape you more than the other?

Biff is clearly struggling with an inner conflict when he says, “I don’t know what the future is. I don’t know—what I’m supposed to want.”
What does society tell you that you are supposed to want as a teenager? How does this align with what you personally want in your life?
What prevents Happy from latching on to Biff’s idea to move out West and work together on a ranch?
If you were in Happy’s position, which would you choose? To pursue a life more fitting to your desires or one-up the people around you and prove yourself?

Look at the relationship between father and son in “The Pursuit of Happiness.” How is this similar to and/or different from the relationship between Willy and his sons?

7. Well-liked vs. Respect vs. Popularity
At the end of the section we read on Friday, Willy says about Charley, “Other men—I don’t know—they do it easier…A man oughta come in with a few words. One thing about Charley. He’s a man of few words, and they respect him” (37). This is the first time he has talked about respect instead of being well-liked.
