1 CIPCROSS BOTANICAL SEED INVENTORY TRACKING SYSTEM
FOR CLONAL CROP BREEDING Introduction: Many opportunities to support complex processes are afforded by the integration of plant breeding and information technology (IT). Plant breeding is a process of developing improved varieties of plants with desirable traits from existing ones. The hybridization is perhaps the most important moment in a breeding program. The generation and management of new cross progenies entail much hand work including record-keeping which is time-consuming and highly subject to human error. An illustrative case study is explained in the figure 1. Pérez, Iván Torres, Alessandro Chirinos, Ximena Salas, Elisa Ordoñez, Benny Amele, Asrat Amoros, Walter Gastelo, Manuel Bonierbale, Merideth Objective: The objective of this work was to develop the Botanical Seed Inventory Tracking System for Clonal Crop Breeding. Methodology: a) Crossing Management Tool v for Pockets PC used the main development platforms Visual Basic 2008 for Windows Mobile OS and SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 for Windows Mobile software. Research Informatics Unit & Genetics, Genomics and Crop Improvement International Potato Center, P.O. Box 1558, Lima 12, Peru Figure 1.- CIP potato breeders carried out three crossing plans/season in which 950 crosses/plan were performed and five labels were generated for each cross. A total of labels were thus written by hand during 336 person-hours. Reports were generated manually by technical staff and typed by the research staff to store the information on their personal computers which are isolated from each other and from the institutional database. b) The Botanical Seed Inventory Tool (BSI) v was designed as an easy-to-use web application. It use as programming languages PHP, Yii Booster, Bootstrap, CSS, Java Script and HTML and MySQL database. Both tools were designed, developed, tested and implemented in the International Potato Center‘s potato breeding program from 2013 through 2015. Results and Conclusions: a) The Crossing Management Tool facilitates the barcode labeling of progenitors and crosses, storing the information in a database and generating automated reports. b) The Botanical Seed Inventory Tool facilitates the recording and accessing of information on the location of botanical seed in the storage facility, documentation of germination tests, updates on seed stocks, information about crosses and breeder‘s name. The system helps breeders develop, integrate and organize their information in a database, avoid typing mistakes and save work time (24 person-hours/14250 labels). Finally, all the information generated is saved in BioMart: a centralized data repository which facilitates access to the information with queries and filters for advanced search (See Figure 2). The users can download these tools through the page web of “The Global Trial data Management System from CIP”.
