Efficiency Wages: Firms pay wages that are above the equilibrium level in order to increase worker productivity Higher than equilibrium wages are set to promote the following goals of the firm: Worker Health: Better paid workers eat better and thus are more productive (only true in poor countries) Worker Turnover: A higher paid worker is less likely to look for another job Worker Effort: Higher wages motivate workers to put forward their best effort Worker Quality: Higher wages attract a better pool of workers to apply for jobs

3 From Work Sheet to Financial Statements to Closing Process
Used adjusting entries to bring certain accounts up-to-date. Most notably, supplies expense and insurance expense. Purpose of this chapter will be to use the Income Statement and Balance Sheet columns of the work sheet to prepare closing entries.

5 Need for Permanent and Temporary Accounts
Lesson 8-1 Need for Permanent and Temporary Accounts LO1 Accounts used to accumulate information from one fiscal period to the next are called permanent accounts. Permanent accounts are also referred to as real accounts. Balance sheet accounts: Assets, Liabilities, Owner’s Equity .

Lesson 8-1 Need for Permanent and Temporary Accounts LO1 Accounts used to accumulate information until it is transferred to the owner’s capital account are called temporary accounts. Temporary accounts are also referred to as nominal accounts Income Statement accounts: Revenue, Expenses, Owner’s Drawing Account and Income Summary.

Lesson 8-1 Need for Closing Temporary Accounts LO1 Journal entries used to prepare temporary accounts for a new fiscal period are called closing entries. The temporary account balances must be reduced to zero at the end of each fiscal period.

Lesson 8-1 Need for the Income Summary Account LO1 When revenue is greater than total expenses, resulting in a net income, the Income Summary account has a credit balance, as shown in the T account. Income Summary Debit Total expenses Credit Revenue (greater than expenses) (Credit balance is the net income.) When total expenses are greater than revenue, resulting in a net loss, the Income Summary account has a debit balance, as shown in the T account. Income Summary Debit Total expenses (greater than revenue) (Debit balance is the net loss.) Credit Revenue
