History of the Poultry sector in Tunisia
1960 Industrial poultry farming was non-existent and poultry products were derived from traditional poultry farming. In 1967, the state installed an integrated breeding of layers and chickens as well as a small hatchery. During 1970s and early 1980s, intensive poultry farming began to develop in Tunisia self-sufficiency was rapidly reached.

The foundation of Tunisian Poultry and Rabbit Association
The sector experienced a severe crisis following acute overproduction and evasive epidemics throughout Tunisia, resulting in the failure of a very large number of farmers. To ensure the harmonious development of the poultry sector , to intervene at all levels of production and provides programming poultry production and market regulation The foundation of Tunisian Poultry and Rabbit Association (Groupement Interprofessionnel des Produits Avicoles et Cunicoles; GIPAC) 2001 Tunisia's accreditation and its classification in the list of countries able to export to the EU.

Distribution of poultry meat recognized by the new reglementation

Problems The licenses to increase production capacity.
No governmental support for over production in local market. Import for 90% of production input (animal, vaccines, drugs, equipment…). High sensibility of production levels to external factors (diseases, climate, ect.). Difficulty in estimating consumption levels. The dominance of intermediaries over producers and not price transparency. Low export competitiveness.

Solutions & Perspectives
Ministry of Agriculture supports import of the breeders based on the technical and fixation of over production level of chicken according to needs of national market. Grantee farmers and promotion of products quality. Applying the new technologies, new strategies and programs. Regulator of the market and promote the export.
