8 The style of realism The writing of realism is exactly what it sounds like. It pays attention to the detail and an effort to replicate the true nature of reality in a way that novelists had ever attempted. Realism refers to the attempt to represent familiar and everyday life situations. • The stories, or plots, were simple and were secondary characters. The characters tended to be from the lower or middle class and spoke as people really did.
