WHAT IS SYPHILIS? Syphilis is an STD that caused by a bacteria called Treponema pallidum It usually transmitted by sexual contact If a women is pregnant the bacteria also will affects the fetus development.

how syphilis can affect fetus?
When a mother is pregnant the bacteria Treponema pallidum travels to fetus via placenta It affect fetus brain, eyes, heart, bones and teeth

At what point in the development process abnormality in teeth occurs?
It occurs in utero Usually by 6 weeks of pregnancy the fetus’s teeth begin to form By 18 weeks hard tissue formation occurs And at that point it causes two abnormalities 1. Mulberry molars 2. Hutchinson’s incisors

Mulberry molars When the bacteria is in the fetus it causes localized enamel hypoplasia (underdeveloped) It creates an abnormal molars in kids and in future as an adult It’s characterized by a dome shaped crown, on cups of the teeth

Hutchinson’s incisors
The Hutchinson’s incisors have a crown with a screwdriver shape that is wide cervically and narrow incisally with a notched incisal edge.

How this abnormality may impact patient?
The patient might have low self-esteem He might be shy to talk, laugh, smile and eat It can affect his social life, work, and relationships

The role of dental hygiene
Are job as dental hygiene is to explain the patient and/or parents that the abnormality is not their fault and that it happened during pregnancy. Don’t ever accuse the patient's parent of having syphilis Offer options of treatment such as straightening of incisors or putting crown, implants, or veneers.
