II. Politics A. President Truman post-WWII President Truman had to overcome a number of labor issues. Railroads, steel factories and coal mines went on strike in 1946. Asked Congress to draft the workers into the army. (1:20 min.) They went back to work.

2. President Truman became unpopular and in 1946 the Republicans won the House and Senate for the first time since 1928.

III. Social Unrest Truman and Civil Rights
1.Pushed for legislation including: Anti-lynching laws Ban on poll taxes Integration of the military Integration of federal workforce 2. Many African-Americans returning from the war demanded rights. 3. In 1947, the Brooklyn Dodgers ended segregation in major league baseball by allowing Jackie Robinson to join the team.

Nominated Strom Thurmond for President.
Election of 1948 To protest Truman’s civil rights record, many Southern Democrats formed the States’ Rights “Dixiecrat” Party Nominated Strom Thurmond for President. Republicans nominated Thomas Dewey Truman, an underdog, traveled the country by train and called out Congress, “do-nothing, 80th Congress” Strom Thurmond Served in the Senate for 48 years

IV. 1952 Republicans Take the White House
Democrats nominate Adlai Stevenson. Republicans nominated Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952. Ike wins despite the problems brought on by Richard Nixon. Nixon was accused of illegally taking money form supporters Went on TV to defend himself. (4:46 min.)

Ike had a number of domestic successes:
Pushed for the creation of an interstate highway system. In 1954, SC ruled in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas that public school needed to end racial segregation Ike supported integration
