Ozone Layer The oxygen we breathe is made up of 2 oxygen atoms.
An ozone molecule is made up of 3 oxygen atoms. Oxygen Molecule, O2
2
Ozone Layer The ozone layer shields us from the sun’s harmful rays.
Ozone absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation that enters the atmosphere. Ultraviolet radiation is an energy that comes from the sun, can damage your skin and cause cancer.
3
CFCs Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are chemical compounds that destroy the ozone layer. CFCs are found in some: Refrigerators Air conditioners Aerosol sprays Styrofoam packaging
4
The Ozone Hole The size of the ozone hole increases and decreases throughout the year. It begins to form in September It’s biggest in October It is gone by December In the mid 1990s, many countries banned the use of CFCs. Now there are less CFCs in the atmosphere!

4.) A free oxygen atom breaks the chlorine-oxygen bond.

5.) Oxygen atoms rejoin to form a normal oxygen (O2) molecule.
