8 Principles of care Consistent with evidence-based best practices from The Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health. All findings are: Supported by multiple, rigorous research studies in multiple settings and with multiple populations. Have been reviewed and approved for accuracy by over 300 independent scientists. Accepted and endorsed by all five of the federal agencies most responsible for addiction policy (SAMHSA, NIDA, NIAAA, CDC, FDA, CMS).

9 Principles of Care Universal screening for SUDs across medical care settings Personalized diagnosis, assessment, and treatment planning Rapid access to appropriate SUD care Engagement in continuing long-term outpatient care with monitoring and adjustments to treatment Concurrent, coordinated care for physical and mental illness Access to fully trained behavioral health professionals Access to FDA-approved medications Access to non-medical recovery support services

10 Today we are announcing…
15 payers covering more than 248 million lives, agree to: identify, promote, and reward care that aligns with the Principles, to work with the Task Force to monitor, and evaluate implementation strategies, and to learn and share with other organizations for the greater goal of improving access to and quality.

11 Next steps Engage providers. Support quality care delivery. Educate consumers. Reduce stigma. Enhance partnerships. Everyone from grass roots to federal agencies. Evaluate Progress. Establish accountability. Next steps: Engage providers. Identify and eliminate constraints providers have in delivering care consonant with the National Principals of Care. Educate consumers. Provide consumers the knowledge they need to i) end the stigma unjustly associated with this disease and ii) identify and demand care consonant with the National Principals of Care. Enhance partnerships. The Task Force recognizes the critical importance of a cross-sector, public-private initiative, and that to implement systems-level change we must engage everyone from the grass roots to federal agencies. Evaluate Progress. The Task Force will work with stakeholders to establish accountability and create the infrastructure to measure 1) progress toward the mission, and 2) success of the ongoing strategies.
