4 Gone GREEN I am facilitating a “GREEN” classroom in conjunction with our school wide efforts to support reducing, reusing and recycling of materials as often as possible (paper in particular) Classroom calendar & some memos will be found on my webpage in the “Calendar & Memos” link

5 Reading Logs Encouraged to read approx 20 min/evening
Variety of text highly recommended (graphic novels, newspaper, non-fiction, chapter book, magazine article, etc) Nightly minutes (Mon.-Thurs) to be completed in chart in purple folders. Collected every Thursday Complete 2 Reader Responses/week Purpose is to further students engagement with a variety of text vs. passively reading to “pass the time”

6 Math Blitzes! 20 individually based math facts every Friday
Completed in blue folders (sent home for you to view & sign weekly) Addition, subtraction & multiplication facts Starting with addition facts next week. X facts not until after Christmas...up to a product of 81

7 Housekeeping ALLERGIES! See school website
During class “parties”, students bring own snack /treat items (limit amount due to NLESD Nutrition Policy) NO homemade food items (whole group items will need to be prior approved, or, a non-food treat) Scholastic book orders ca be done on-line or via cheque (if possible, send cheques) Students need to dress weather appropriate (layers is best) for outdoor play Field trip forms & fees need to be labelled with “Class 401; students name; amount enclosed & description)

8 Curriculum Development
Integrated, “hands-on” learning approach Involves students “doing” things...not passively listening & watching Much of the evaluation process is “observation” based rather than the traditional “paper-pencil” routine tasks Learning new strategies...the “how” of getting the answer to a problem...inquiry based Combination of learning environments (whole group instruction; small group activities; & independent assessment) 1st year of elementary, independent work skills will be practised & stressed as year progresses

9 Vacation & Illness Legally; some form of communication to teacher or office is required for all absences or changes in dismissal procedure (agenda note/ /office phone call) Due to curriculum layout for primary & elementary as stated by NLESD policies (inquiry based/hands on approach to learning), challenging for students to complete work while on vacations or sick (see web page for additional details in “Evaluation” link) Due to several factors (materials required; teacher instruction required; small group activities; modelling of task; oral activities, etc)

10 Assessment & Evaluation
Portfolios sent home periodically throughout the year Contains a SAMPLE of their work completed for that timeframe (portfolios need to be returned each time) NLESD scale of 1-4 as per last years new report card scale Wide variety of samples used (see web page for eg in “Evaluation” link) Independence is encouraged Not just the “final” product...learning is an ongoing process...
