THE PERIODIC TABLE AN INTRODUCTION
8
INVENTION OF THE PERIODIC TABLE
DMITRI MENDELEEV invented this table in order to organize the elements Not only are they organized, they are organized in a way that explains and predicts their physical and chemical properties
9
MENDELEEV Russian scientist played solitaire with the 64 elements known at the time He first arranged them in order of increasing atomic mass When an element started to repeat properties he had seen before, he started a brand new row
10
His table:
11
Mendeleev’s Periodic Law
If the elements are arranged according to their atomic mass, a pattern can be seen in which similar properties occur regularly.
12
Testing his Periodic Law
Mendeleev had predicted that elements would be discovered to fill in the empty spaces in his periodic table His predictions were found to be accurate A century later, it is still used to summarize chemical facts

14
The Groups on the Periodic Table
15
GROUPS OF ELEMENTS A set of elements in the same column (running up and down) are called a CHEMICAL GROUP or FAMILY These elements have similar physical and chemical properties They form similar kinds of compounds when they combine with other elements
16
Class Work Use the handout to colour the different groups of the periodic table. If you don’t have any pencil crayons, you may borrow mine. If you borrow mine, put them back after you are finished!
