5. When a cause-and-effect relationship exists between two variables we describe this relationship as causal.
The independent variable, referred to as the explanatory variable, causes an increase or decrease in the dependent, or response, variable.
A correlation is simply a measure of the relationship between two variables.
It does not imply that one variable causes a change in the other.

6. Sometimes it may look like there is a causal relationship between two variables, but when the relationship is studied further, a lurking variable is effecting both variables.
An example of this is the assumption that consuming ice cream was causing polio. In fact, it was not causing polio, but the warm weather caused spikes in ice cream consumption and polio.
The warm weather was the lurking variable.

Remember that causal language should indicate one variable is affecting the other and indicate the direction of that causality, while non-causal, correlational language notes and describes a relationship, without suggesting that one variable affects the other.
