Government must follow certain rules before it takes away a right or freedom from a citizen Example: trial by jury if accused of a crime

Law must treat all people in the same way

Have certain limits – cannot exercise Our rights if they hurt others or take away their rights or freedoms

Citizen Person who owes loyalty to a country and receives its protection Natural born citizen – born on US soil (includes territories and military bases around the world) or born in another country but has a parent who is a US citizen

Naturalization Process to become a US citizen if you were born in another country

Responsibilities and Duties
Duty – something you must do (pay taxes, follow laws, sit on a jury when called) Responsibility – things a person should do but are not required (vote, take part in government, respect the rights of others)
