Summary Task Working on your own, summarise the key events of chapter five in fifty words or less. You have four minutes. 4 minutes End

Nick’s Morals ‘I’m going to call up Daisy tomorrow and invite her over here to tea’ What does the above quotation suggest to readers about Nick’s morals? Is Nick the honest character he professes to be?

Gatsby and Daisy In your pair, decide on who is number one and who is number two. One member of the pair will be considering the way the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby develops in this chapter. The other member of your pair will look at the author’s use of the weather to reflect the general mood of the chapter.

Individual Task Number One Number Two Identify the changes of weather in this chapter and explain how the changes relate to Gatsby’s feelings at various points. Describe how the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy develops in this chapter.

Instructions Regardless of your task, you should write a detailed response which includes: A detailed explanation. Key quotations to support your observations. Detailed analysis. Your personal response.

Pair and Share Find another person who has examined the same section as you. Share your ideas and note down anything new you learn from this person. Return to your original pair and take notes based upon the observations of your partner.

Anti-Climax Analyse the following two quotations in pairs. What do they tell us about Gatsby’s feelings at the end of the chapter? What do we learn about the nature of Gatsby’s dream? ‘Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of the light had vanished forever… His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.’ ‘I saw that the faint expression of bewilderment had come back into Gatsby's face, as though a faint doubt had occurred to him as to the quality of his present happiness. Five years! There just have been moments even on that afternoon when Daisy stumbled short of his dreams – not through her fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. …No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man can store up in his ghostly heart.’
