Week 12 Revision of formulae and scale
Functional MATHS Week 12 Revision of formulae and scale
2
Today’s starter…
3
Re-cap: What did we do last week?
4
Re-cap: What we did last week…
Scale Drawings Use scale to draw a diagram Draw an accurate scale plan using a given scale expressed as a ratio Interpret real life measurements from a scale diagram Solve problems involving scale (Ratio and Proportion part 2)
5
Conversion trick– helpful rhyme
Convert 200g to Kg 0.2 Kg Convert 150cm to mm 1500 mm Convert 0.35 L to ml 350 ml

Scale Re-cap Scale - Recap

Scale Drawing: Re-cap Example: 1cm : 100cm
Scale drawing allows us to draw large objects on a smaller scale or a smaller object on a larger scale, keeping them accurate. All scale drawings must have a scale written on them. Scales are usually expressed as ratios. Example: 1cm : 100cm The ratio 1cm:100cm means that for every 1cm on the scale drawing the length will be 100cm in real life
8
Scale Drawings A scale of 1 cm : 2m for every 1cm measured on a
this represents 2m in real-life.
9
Scale Drawings A scale of 1 : 200 …means for every 1 measured on a
drawing this represents 200 in real-life. So if you measured 1cm it is worth 200cm in real life. Or if you measured 1mm it is worth 200mm in real life
10
Scale Drawings : Example
4x25= 100cm 4cm 2cm 2x25 = 50cm The scale of this drawing is 1cm = 25cm What is the actual width and height of the TV ?

Activity for you ‘Youth Club’ worksheet
13
L1 Extension task: Design me a garden!
Draw a plan of the garden onto squared paper Include the pond, playground, vegetable garden, shed and grass area You’ll need to think of a suitable scale to use so that it will fit on your paper
14
L2 Extension task: Map distances - Europe
Use a ruler to measure the distance in cm from one city to another (e.g. 3.9cm) Multiply by the map scale to record the real life distance in cm Convert this into Km
15
Put your name on it please before handing in!

What are we going to do today?
Revision of formulae (tasks 1 & 2) Calculate substituting letters for numbers Understand and use simple word formulae Solve problems by substituting into a formula (to include letters and symbols)
17
Rules of formulae: Expressions
pq p × q abc a × b × c e/m e ÷ m h² h × h ( h squared) a + b the value of a added to the value of b c – d take away the value of d from the value of c 3x 3 times the value of x; 3x = 3 × x

Formulae is a way of describing a relationship between variables
What is formulae? Formulae is a way of describing a relationship between variables For example: How do you calculate the area of a room? Length x Width (You always do this calculation, regardless of what the length and width are) Area = Length x Width A = L X W This is a formula!!
