Film: Day & Night
2
What is the value of film?
Not only does film have intrinsic value, but it helps shape an individual into becoming a well-rounded person. For some individuals, watching a film is just a form of entertainment; for others, it’s a form of income. Day & Night is an animated film that addresses the subject of equality and the theme, we fear what we don’t know.

Day & Night, 2010 Day & Night is an animated Pixar short film, directed by Teddy Newton and produced by Kevin Reher. It was shown in theaters before Toy Story 3. Language Arts Connection #1: THEME
We are all the same, yet different too! Looks can be deceiving Knowledge is more powerful than ignorance Differences can make a friendship stronger

Language Arts Connection #2: TONE
Can anyone in class recognize the symbolism of the red planes? The tone of Day & Night changes as the plot advances. At the start, Day and Night are hostile to one another. Both Day and Night try to prove one is better than the other by showing off the unique characteristic and physical traits each possess. This dialogue is done through dramatic exchanges between the characters. They push and shove and even fight at one point. Even though neither speak, each displays his own point of view through a variety of hyperboles of sound, color, and size. Once they see what the other has to celebrate, each character begins to show off in a more positive way and the tone changes to playful, positive and joyful. One example is displayed in the picture to the left. Day positively boasts his characterization by enlarging himself and his muscles to allow the planes to fly by. During this scene, the sound adds to the imagery because the planes are very loud and the sound supports the image of strength and power.

The Red Arrows: Symbolism
The Red Arrows, officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, is the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force.
8
Imagery: A term used to describe an author’s use of vivid descriptions.
The creator’s style really shines through from the very beginning of this playful short film. One way the creator’s excel at this is through sound and color. While celebrating and enjoying one another in Vegas, the music is upbeat and the imagery is very colorful. While Day and Night are dancing, a viewer can feel the excitement and energy that Vegas has to offer its visitors. Another example is the pool scene. In a moment from dark to light, like the blink of an eye, the viewer is taken to a hot, sunny day through Day’s window. Giggling girls in cute, colorful bikinis enjoy the summer sun while “Surfin’USA,” an iconic song we can relate to, plays in the background.
9
Symbolism: An object or element incorporated into a narrative to represent another concept or concern. The radio broadcast in Day & Night is taken from a talk given by Dr. Wayne Dyer, a motivational speaker and author. Director Teddy Newton remembered hearing Dr. Dyer on recordings his mother played when he was young, and he decided to incorporate one of the recordings into the film. The broadcast supports and symbolizes the theme “fear of the unknown.” At first, Day and Night feared one another because each didn’t look past the initial appearance. They were afraid of their differences. Once each character learned what the other had to offer and celebrate, Day and Night both accepted each other’s differences while learning they were similar too!
10
Allusion: When a text references, incorporates, or responds to an earlier piece.
The movie Day is watching is actually the Thunderbolt show from Walt Disney’s 101 Dalmatians film. Some of the cars watching the Thunderbolt show in Night's window are at least the same model as characters from Cars.
11
This is allusion because the creator intentionally referenced these other works of art.
12
Denouement: The falling action of a narrative when the climax and central conflicts are resolved and resolution is found. At the end of the light-hearted, short film Day & Night, the theme shines through almost as bright as the imagery! When Day and Night put their differences aside, they see they are the same too. By accepting one another’s differences, they learned each has something important to offer; but if they work together… the possibilities are not only endless, but can be a magical moment in time. What is the symbolism here?

FUN FACTS The wolf inside Night's "window" is a modified version of Alpha from Up. The bicycle sound effect was used for Roller Bob in the Toy Story Animated Storybook, while the sheep sound effects were from Bo Peep's Sheep. Although Boundin' is the only Pixar theatrical short not based on a feature film to have dialogue, at the end of Day & Night, a man can be heard talking on the radio. This is the first Pixar short to show the title at the end rather than the beginning. Teddy Newton is the director in which he voiced Chatter Telephone in Toy Story 3, the feature film that Day & Night was released with. The Wilhelm scream is heard during the movie scene when the cowboy shoots a man offscreen.

The Wilhelm Scream The Wilhelm scream is a stock sound effect first used in for the movie Distant Drums.
