Fig. 1 Scanning electron microscopy images illustrating tumors on the peritoneum in mice 4 weeks after intraperitoneal injection of OVCAR-3 cells. The specimens shown were taken from the upper left quadrant of the abdominal wall. Images like these were used to determine the size of the tumors, as well as the numbers of tumors of each size at the time of treatment. Panels (A), (B), and (C) show images of tumors with dimensions similar to those considered in the radiation dosimetry, i.e., rtumor equal to ∼30, ∼45, and ∼95 μm. Panel (D) shows an image where a typical distribution of tumor sizes is present. International Journal of Radiation Oncology • Biology • Physics , DOI: ( /j.ijrobp ) Copyright © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Fig. 2 Specific energy to tumor cell nuclei as a function of distance from the tumor center for 3 tumor sizes (rtumor = 30, 45, and 95 μm). The 95 μm tumor represents the largest tumor found at the time of treatment. The specific energies are shown for the 4 activity levels used (25, 50, 100, and 200 kBq) as well as for the 4 irradiation geometries considered: activity homogeneously distributed at the antigenic sites throughout the whole tumor (▴), activity homogeneously distributed only at the antigenic sites within the assumed maximum diffusion depth (30 μm) (×), activity distributed only at those antigenic sites defining the surface of the tumor (), and activity homogeneously distributed in the abdominal fluid surrounding the tumor (▵). For each tumor size, the core (C) and shells (S) are indicated by the vertically dashed lines (- - -). The vertical lines farthest to the right and left for each tumor size represent the surface and the center of the tumor, respectively. The vertical solid line (—) in the 95-μm tumor diagrams represents the maximum path length of the α-particles when emitted from the surface of the tumor. The polynomial fits are indicated by the dotted lines (· · ·). International Journal of Radiation Oncology • Biology • Physics , DOI: ( /j.ijrobp ) Copyright © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions
