1. Progress on curricula and assessment

Progress on curricula and assessment Bids for resources received from all Departments Staff recruitment and backfill for DUGSs underway Curriculum mapping software New Horizons/BPES offer for All UGs Support for Departments including workshops, drop-in sessions, online toolkits. Kick-off workshop 31st Jan New programmes for 1st year UGs starting Oct 2019; need approval by the end of March 2019 Call in Nov - Significant investment In people: Strategic Teaching Fellows! Purpose? 1) To provide expertise for transformation, 2) to work with academics to achieve change; plan is NOT for 2-track teaching – research; Spend justified? 2016 figures: Total income £968M of which £244M Tuition Fees…strategy budget =£8M/2 yrs: annual budget amounts to <0.5% total income and <2% student fee income; We need to be seen to be investing in education! Rhumbl, the JourneyMaker (Univ Queensland, Ian Cameron), Sofia (FoM) New integrative modules – Horizons/BPES Pulling together EDU, CLCC, Registry etc.

Progress on pedagogy transformation Funding for active learning projects to improve our teaching Stream A – Whole Departments or groups of Departments Stream B – Seed funding for small and medium sized initiatives New Active Learning course from EDU launching in February Visit from Peter Lepage Active Learning: Making learning more engaging, challenging, authentic and satisfying; Open-ended enquiry-based labs; Innovations to help our students think like experts! (Peter LaPage e.g. American Civil War: expert cf student talk through some written artifacts) - think like experts – train to think like us! Rolling call, 1st deadline Dec 1st 2017, next one March 2nd 2018 This is an opportunity not a mandate….be in the vanguard or hang back and see what happens…there IS real appetite for change around College… This new, four-part blended learning course is designed to introduce staff to the basic theories and principles underlying active learning, as well as considering practical suggestions for incorporating active learning strategies into their curriculum. Those of you at Peter Lapage’s lecture – active learning is more fun for students and Staff. (NB. Will circulate link to Panopto and slides later today).

Progress towards an inclusive & diverse culture Excellence Fund for Learning and Teaching Innovation – new call to support development of inclusive curriculum content – deadline 29th Jan New EDU workshop on Making Teaching More Inclusive and new inclusive teaching toolkit Reward, retention and recognition frameworks for teaching staff New Imperial Student Shapers scheme Inclusive learning which benefits from different experiences and perspectives; celebrate diversity as an opportunity not a problem! Embedding equality, diversity and inclusivity into our community Inclusivity is more than just avoiding PP colour combinations which exclude colour-blind students! Choice of examples, topics, approach, role models Reward, Retention and Recognition – promotion and progression for Teaching Fellows (L&T Job Family); Provost Board green light to switch from Hay job level evaluation to process aligned with academic promotions via panel/peer evaluation of individual merit – to Professor of Education; Towards establishing a culture that values teaching as highly as research Nick Burstow – ICU Dep President (Education) heading up a new initiative – Student Shapers: funding for student conceived L&T projects Talking teaching events? – to build community and networks

Name of presentation 12 September, 2018 Evaluation & research PhD students Research Associate working on diversity and inclusion in learning and teaching New educational research collaborations with: Cornell, UBC, Stanford, Harvard selected LERU partners: Helsinki, Leiden, UCL, Utrecht Tsinghua Integral part of several Departmental Curriculum Review plans – evaluation! With co-supervision by EDU Bianca Wilson e.g. working to embed inclusivity/unconscious bias training in e.g. LTDP; Data collection in SIMP to satisfy College data forecasting, HESA futures etc. Nascent collaborations with other institutions e.g. Sonia Kumar (FoM) – David Hirsch (Harvard med School) longitudinal patient engagement
